Ecological Footprints
Simon Ejdemyr December 2015

On average, humanity's demand on biocapacity exceeds the world's natural capacity by 50% (World Wildlife Fund, 2014). Put differently, 1.5 planet Earths would be required to meet human pressure on local and global ecosystems.

But the ecological footprint left by humans varies substantially across countries. In the chart, each bar gives the number of planet Earths required if everyone in the world lived the average lifestyle of a resident in that country. For example, almost 4 planet Earths would be required to support the lifestyle of a typical U.S. citizen.
